How Video Games Are Unlocking Real-World Skills in Autistic Learners

For decades, video games have been seen as distractions — the enemy of attention, productivity, and academic focus. But emerging research, particularly in neurodiversity studies, tells a different story: for many autistic and ADHD learners, video games are not an escape from learning — they are the gateway into it.

Rather than diminishing cognitive skills, games can enhance attention, problem-solving, communication, and even academic performance. And importantly, they do so in environments where neurodivergent players feel safe, in control, and engaged.

Cognitive Gains Through Gameplay

The cognitive demands of video games are often underestimated. Within gaming environments, players are constantly required to make rapid decisions, shift strategies, and track multiple variables — processes that mirror executive functioning skills educators aim to develop.

Research has shown that games can improve task switching (Cain et al., 2012), auditory perception (Lelo de Larrea-Mancera et al., 2021), and attentional control (He et al., 2022) in neurotypical players. While skill transfer across contexts remains debated, there is compelling evidence that, for some, these gains do extend beyond the screen (McKinley et al., 2011; Franceschini et al., 2017).

More importantly, autistic players themselves report these benefits.

Why Neurodivergent Learners Engage Deeply with Games

Autistic and ADHD learners often experience traditional classrooms as environments of constraint — rigid routines, unpredictable social expectations, and learning formats that don’t always align with how they process information. Video games, by contrast, offer a structured yet flexible space where rules are clear, progress is trackable, and exploration is rewarded.

In my own research, I found that autistic and ADHD players are not only able to sustain attention in gaming environments but also often develop strategies, reflect critically on challenges, and build resilience through trial-and-error. Games can support focused engagement that surpasses what some learners experience in passive settings, such as watching TV or sitting through lectures.

Rather than asking learners to adapt to the system, games adapt to them — offering autonomy, feedback, and flow, which are often missing from conventional educational models.

Rethinking Academic Learning Through Gaming

The idea that learning must be separated from interest is still a common misconception in many school systems. But for autistic and ADHD learners, interest is often the gateway to competence. Video games, when integrated meaningfully, provide an opportunity to develop academic and communication skills organically — not through direct instruction, but through purpose-driven practice.

Whether it’s spelling and writing through in-game interaction, understanding historical systems through strategy games, or developing critical thinking through game mechanics, these experiences are not incidental—they’re evidence of meaningful learning through digital play. Educators and researchers should not only acknowledge this but also consider how academic outcomes can be achieved more effectively when we embrace the tools and environments that actually motivate learners.

If education systems continue to see games only as distractions, they will miss a vital opportunity — not only to engage neurodivergent students, but to learn from how they learn. Of course, video games are not a panacea. But for many autistic players, they represent a space where learning feels natural, failure is safe, and success is self-defined.

It’s time we take that seriously.
