In this enlightening book, social psychologist Devon Price explores the concept of ‘masking’—the suppression of one’s true self to conform to societal expectations. Price delves into the experiences of autistic individuals who have long concealed their identities and offers guidance on embracing neurodiversity. Published in April 2022, this work challenges misconceptions and advocates for authenticity.
Masking involves autistic individuals suppressing their natural behaviours, such as stimming (self-stimulatory actions like hand-flapping or rocking), to blend into mainstream society. This adaptation often requires immense cognitive and emotional effort, leading to exhaustion, anxiety, and a diminished sense of self. Price highlights that while masking can facilitate social acceptance, it frequently results in adverse mental health outcomes, including depression and burnout.
